when words leave you wanting: an insufficient thanks

So there’s this girl. And a lot has been changing in her world lately. Cross-country transplants, new jobs, new community, new wardrobe requirements, a lot of new mostly. But she anticipated all of this, and while it hasn’t all been easy, it came as little surprise to her in her recently shaken & stirred life. But then came along this boy… and she did not expect him. He brought her flowers and left her notes and picked up the bill and covered her in prayer from day one. And she’s still catching her breath from it all to be honest. But as the gestures get sweeter and the time spent more intentional, she doesn’t want to miss the opportunity to say thank you. For all the ways he’s made her feel special. For all the times he was listening, which she is continually discovering is all of the time apparently. For all the strength of character he’s demonstrated in the careful and thoughtful ways he’s chosen to lead. For all the prayers he’s prayed over her, and for all the risks he’s taken along the way. She hopes she’s said it enough, but as he continues to surprise her and put fresh smiles on her face with each new day, she’s becoming more aware that it simply isn’t possible for her to say it enough or express it effectively. Yet still, she must try.

So in light of this Season of Thanks… thank you. You know who you are.

  2. And there’s this boy. And his life has not been defined by recent changes in the way the girl’s has–same city, same community, same wardrobe requisites–yet this girl also stepped into his life unexpectedly… And things were a bit different from that point on.

He would probably say this girl is making him sound too good. And he would definitely say that the flowers, the notes, the listening, the praying are just an organic reaction to who this girl is. They are merely what a girl with a heart and a beauty like she has deserves…

And as for this Season of Thanks: this boy is afraid he cannot express an adequate ‘thank you’ for everything… For the laughs, for the sustenance, for the conversation, for the encouragement, for the challenges, for the intentionality, and for just who she is. But, as an lackluster attempt: He is thankful for her as well.
